This page describes routes that serve the Collins View vicinity, and offers suggestions on how to Ride these routes to travel to nearby communities and to the airport.
People outside of Collins View, but nearby, should be able to adapt this advice for their situation.
We invite others in Portland to explore their transit landscape, and share the knowledge locally to promote ridership!
Getting to Hillsdale, Fred Meyer, Ida B Wells-Barnett High School
Just hop on the #39 HILLSDALE line. See Trip Planner and Transit Tracker below for tips.
Very limited service hours!
Take #43 to Hillsdale. Catch it along Taylor's Ferry (west of Terwilliger), or at Carson & Terwilliger, or the stop at SW Troy in South Burlingame.
You can get off #43 at Fred Meyer, Stop 199, right out front on Barbur, or continue on to Hillsdale stops 925 or 929.
Getting Home from Fred Meyer, Ida B Wells-Barnett High School, Hillsdale
To get home from Fred Meyer, use the stop on Barbur for #39 Stop ID: 199, or use the stop up behind FM "SW Bertha & Barbur" (up some steps from the east parking lot) and catch #43. Stop ID: 11211 —
We need a diagram/map showing relevant stops around Fred Meyer - they are dispersed.
To get home from Hillsdale, use Stop 955 and catch #43, or within HS service hours catch #39 at Stop 925 or 929, as per diagram below.
If you off the #43 in Hillsdale -
remember that #43 goes through Hillsdale eastbound on its way to OHSU.
So, you may not want to board #43 at stops 925 or 929.
Wait for #43 at 955 near Sunset Blvd, and it will take Bertha then the Terwilliger Bridge back to the Collins View area.
To Lake Oswego and Lake Grove
Take #35 to Lake Oswego.
Lake Oswego itself is served by #35 (both 35T and 35R), and another bus line or two.
Getting Home from Lake Oswego
The Transit Center, as such, in Oswego is next to Safeway, near the Post Office.
To Lake Grove
#38 goes to Lake Grove, but only along its northern edge , eg Kruse Way.
There is no transit center in Lake Grove - it's all through traffic.
To West Linn and Oregon City
Take #35 to Lake Oswego as above, then simply continue on to West Linn, or Oregon City.
If you get off in West Linn, you'll wanna note the paired stop for your return trip.
The Oregon City Transit Center has good connections to places in Clackamas County.
The Transit Center is just North of downtown Oregon City. The #35 stops there, and leaves from the same spot - reserved for #35, so no need for a diagram.
#35T will leave that spot as per schedule.
Beware! In Oregon City, be sure that you are boarding a 35T, not 35R if you wanna return directly to Collins View in one boarding -- without stopping for a while in West Linn, or Lake Oswego before catching a real #35T. (Hint: That may be something you want do try!)
Take #38 directly downtown during weekday commuter rush hour times.
When #38 is not running, or as an alternative to #38:
Take #35T to downtown via John's Landing.
Take #43 to Hillsdale, and then take any of (#44, #45, #54, #56) downtown.
Take #39 to Hillsdale, and then take any of (#44, #45, #54, #56) downtown.
Take #39 to Barbur Blvd, and transfer to #12 at TOBACCO TOWN (Across from SAFEWAY).
You can also walk across a bridge over I-5 to Barbur Blvd, and catch #12 at KAADY Carwash, or TOBACCO TOWN (Across from SAFEWAY).
Since #39 goes along much of Terwilliger, people can come out of the neighborhood to catch it to Hillsdale or where-ever. HOWEVER, 39 now has very limited service hours.
#12 - Walk over to Kaady Car Wash and catch a #12 downtown.
Getting Home from Downtown
See 'On The Transit Mall' on the
Stops and Transit Centers page
to see where to catch buses mentioned here.
Alternatives
#38. During weekday commute hours - take #38.
#35T. Any day - Take #35T! It will come up Taylor's Ferry and stop at the top of the hill at the SHELL station. You can deboard there, or stay on to ride south along Terwilliger a ways.
#12 to Starbucks on Barbur at Terwilliger. Have someone in a car meet you at BARBUR SHOPS.
#12 to Fred Meyer. Have someone pick you up there.
#12 to walk. It's possible to deboard #12 on Barbur, cross the Terwilliger bridge, and walk along Terwilliger to Burlingame / Collins View — but you may not want to do that at night.
Errands in Hillsdale on the way home
#44,45,54,56 - Want to do some shopping in Hillsdale on the way home? Take (44,45,54,56) to Hillsdale.
Then, to get home from Hillsdale, take #43 - catch it at Capitol Hwy and Sunset (Stop 955).
Alternative - If #39 is in Service you can also hop on to get home.
Suggestions for Getting to PDX (Airport) and Back
If you are good, you can take a 6:30 AM #38, and make it to a RED LINE MAX to the Airport, depart on an 8:30 AM flight. But 6:30 is the earliest bus there is without using #12 to get downtown.
If you have a really early flight, have someone drop you at Pioneer Square or up by Library (West of Pio Square) in time to get a RED LINE to the PORTLAND AIRPORT.
Just use Trimet Trip Planner (link below) for Pioneer Courthouse Square to PDX. Enter the time you want to arrive at PDX. Then allow time to drive to the Square of course. The MAXes do actually run as per schedule. They have to keep them moving, and they control their own right of way for much of their line.
Getting Home from PDX (Airport)
It takes 40 minutes to go from PDX to Pioneer Courthouse Square in DownTown.
Just head for the MAX station at PDX from the south end of the baggage claim area.
You can buy a ticket (notes below) just before going outside, also outside before the platform. The ride into town is about 40 minutes. You may have to wait 10 minutes before MAX leaves, so make your call to home once the train is moving.
Have your family or a friend pick you up at Pioneer Courthouse Square. There is a pull-out on Broadway adjacent to the Square (opposite Nordstrom). Broadway is ONE WAY going South. (The Automobile-Driver could take I-5 to I-405 to Salmon Street exit).
Take some virtual rides on the New Collins View Blog
There will be a companion series of New Collins View Blog articles describing actual rides taken on these transit lines.
Simple diagrams will be produced for the articles, showing the endpoints of each route and stops of interest along the way, plus a narration of a typical ride.
