Transit Centers & Stops

Conceptually, the Nodes of the system are what matter most -- where you hop on/off the bus.

Fun Facts:

  1. STOPS are a basic building blocks of the system.
  2. There are over 6,000 bus stops in the system!
  3. Each STOP in the system as a unique 3-5 digit STOP ID.
  4. Buses stop at stops to let new riders on and happy riders off.
  5. A cluster of Stops can function as a "Hub".
  6. Riders get on/off at any stop along a line, not just at hubs or the end of the line.
  7. There are a dozen Large hubs - the TriMet Transit Centers. Some centers are Intermodal.

Let's pretend there is a Collins View Transit Hub, CVHUB, at Terwilliger and Taylor's Ferry.

The unofficial Collins View Transit HUB LoGo

This might be called the Collins View Burlingame Transit Center, CVBTC, or the Collins View South Burlingame Transit Center, CVSBTC. BUT, the "Transit Center" designation is likely 'reserved' for Hubs with certain characteristics.

Do you have a better idea for a name?

The Collins View Transit Hub

Notice a lot of Busses passing through? Where are they going, and where do they stop?

Black Dots are Stops. Numbered squares are buses of the given line. The orange arrows show the direction of travel of the buses.

Turns and Stops at the intersection of Terwilliger and Taylors Ferry Road (CV-HUB?)

The diagram shows where buses are going, but not where they are coming from. If you are going somewhere, it really doesn't matter where your "ride" just came from.

The purpose of this "Bus Spotting" diagram is to get people thinking — all they have to do is SHOW UP at one of those Black Dots and they will be transported downtown, Oregon City, Tigard, OHSU, or Market of Choice in West Linn, and so on in one ride - with no transfers. It's all available near the intersection (.. or away along Terwilliger, or along Taylors Ferry.)

See similar diagrams below for where you can board buses Downtown, in Hillsdale, in Lake Oswego, etc, in order to Arrive back at this Hub.

The Portland Transit Mall

The Transit Mail downtown is the Mother of All Transit Centers, consisting primarily of SW 5th Ave and SW 6th Ave. 6th is one way northbound, while 5th is southbound.

There are 3 or 4 southbound stops for #35 on the main Transit Mall.

Section of Downtown Transit Mall, with stops for 35, 44, 54, and 38

Q: Where should one catch a #35 or #38 to return to the Collins View vicinity? (Our other buses, #39, and #43 don't go downtown.)

A: The homeward stops for #35 are on 5th Ave at Alder, Main, and Clay. #35 turns onto Harrison and stops at 4th (Stop 2580) before going down into Harbor Place and South Waterfront. #38 runs on Columbia Street, with a stop just east of 5th (12794), and another on Columbia at 1st.

Q: What if I wanna go to Hillsdale on the way home to Collins View?

A: What is cool is that the stops for #35 coincide with buses that are going to Hillsdale, You can take #44 or #54 from downtown to Hillsdale, then hop on #43 at Capitol Hwy and Sunset (Stop 955) to get home.

A2: #45 or #56 will also get to Hillsdale, but from different stops, not shown here.

Hillsdale

Hillsdale has a Mini Mall, a Transit Center/Hub along Capitol Hwy

Relevant Stops in Hillsdale along Capitol Highway

Lake Oswego (LOCT)

Lake Oswego has a mini Transit Center on 4th between A and B Avenues.

Relevant Stops in Lake Oswego, by Safeway

AT LOCT, 8207 goes back to Collins View, while 8208 goes toward Oregon City.

You don't have to go up to the LOCT to catch a bus, there are also stops where 2nd Street intersects A&B Avenues. Buses stopping at 2&B are arriving in LO, while buses stopping at 2&A are leaving. SO, if you go to LO, you could hop off at 2nd Street, and on return, board on A Ave at 2nd Street - and never go up by Safeway, Post Office or Pub. The Stop ID for 2&A is '3', so it's easy to keep an eye on the departure time there!

Tigard Transit Center (TTC)

Tigard's Transit Center is cool. It's at the east end of town, located next to WES - Westside Commuter Rail, and not far from Symposium Coffeehouse.

#12 and #43 go the TTC. Yamhill County Transit (YCTA) comes into TTC. You can grab free ride out to McMinnville. From there, go up to Carlton, Forest Grave and Hillboro, via YCTA.

Transit Hubs

A cluster of Stops can function as a "Hub". In the above, the blocks around the Terwilliger & Taylors Ferry intersection form a veritable Transit Hub. There are many smaller hubs.

Example: Fulton Hub

Consider just 4 stops at the bottom of Taylors Ferry Road at Macadam, removed north one block at Nevada.

Fulton Hub Pattern

In this Hub, one can:

*The point is, you don't have to know everything going on at any given Hub in order to use the Hub. (BTW - this area was the Town of Fulton, back in riverboat days, and Macadam what White House Road.)

Example: Hub Name

Consider... another hub somewhere.

In this Hub, one can:

Paired Stops and Shared Stops - two Transit Patterns

Stops usually come in pairs, so that when one gets off a bus, you can come back to that general area to catch a bus going in the opposite direction. The paired stop is usually on other side of the street.

Paired Stops on Terwilliger at SW Lobelia

In fact, there are pairs of stops along Terwilliger all the way south to Hwy 43 — at Tryon Creek State Park, for example. The are pairs of stops along Taylors Ferry, Barbur Blvd — pairs of stops all over Portland, so don't worry..

On a one way street, it isn't possible for the Paired stop to be on the other side of the street! If you intend to return the way you came, look around for the 'return' stop before leaving your departure area.

At the end of the line, the last stop may also be where the bus departs. The bus will just go around the block to get going the other way. This is true in Oregon City - #35 stops at the Transit Center, and departs from that spot/slot (Stop #8762) after the driver takes a break, or a new driver takes the seat.

Another example of Paired Stops is out in Tigard, along Barbur Blvd. You could Go west on #12 to SW 74th, get off, go to Mike's Drive In, then catch a return trip, by Mike's on the south side of Barbur.

Shared Stops. A large portion of stops in the system are used by two or more lines.

Shared Stops. Stops along Terwilliger for example, have stops for 38, 39, and 35T. 38 is weekday rush hour only. 39 is start/end of day for High Schoolers. 35T comes 7 days/week, and ~17 hours/day.

Shared Stops. In Estacada, TriMet share stops with Sandy Transit.
